ACS delegation attends 5th Summit of Heads of State and Government of Latin America and the Caribbean- European Union

Port of Spain, (June 2, 2008) – A delegation of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), which consisted of the Secretary General, Ambassador Luis Fernando Andrade Falla, the Director of Natural Disasters and Transport, Mr. Luis Carpio, and the Political Advisor, Mr. Watson Denis, participated in the 5th Summit of Heads of State and Government of Latin America and the Caribbean- European Union, which took place from May 16 to 17, 2008.


One of the main topics of this Summit was: “Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Change and Energy.” In accordance with this topic, the Chairman of the Ministerial Meeting (Republic of Haiti) H.E. Jean Rénald Clérisme convened a Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the ACS to discuss the topic of Climate Change and Adaptation in the Greater Caribbean. The participants at the Meeting recognized the global implications of this phenomena and engaged themselves to work together to mitigate its impact.

On the other hand, the Summit of Lima was an excellent opportunity for ACS to strength its relations with many States and institutions in the Caribbean, Latin American, and Europe. In this regard, Ambassador Andrade and the ACS delegation had several meetings and working sessions with many delegations, including with H.E. Patricia Espinosa of the United States of Mexico, the Secretary General of CARICOM, Mr. Edwin Carrington, and the Secretary General of SICA (Central American Integration System), M. Aníbal Quiñonez.
