Shepherds Harvest Festival Spins Up Sheep for Heifer International
Like spinning straw into gold, the Fiber Sandwich event at Shepherds Harvest Festival turned fiber into cold cash - $345 dollars worth of cash or enough to buy nearly three sheep for Heifer International!
For two years running, the Northern Lights Spinning Guild has hosted a charity spin-in at Shepherds Harvest called The Fiber Sandwich.
Festival vendors showcase their fibers by donating 8 ounces of fiber to the cause. Fibers can include fibers such as: llama, angora, mohair, camel, yak, silk, Angelina, alpaca and of course many varieties of wool. Once collected it’s nearly 15 pounds of fiber!
Guild members lay the various fibers out in strips and stack them like a sandwich, laying fiber upon fiber until all the contributions have been used. This unique mixture is then peeled off into 4-ounce sections and given to the spinners to work their magic.
Festival Goers get to enjoy watching the spinners test their skill on this blend of surprising combinations and knitters get to purchase the unique and magnificent yarns in a Silent Auction. The yarns are so unique and popular that this year the charity event earned a record $345 dollars, and with an additional $25 from other sales it became enough to buy 3 sheep for some lucky Heifer International recipient.
At Shepherds Harvest fiber magic generates shear joy for those at the festival and those in need.
